Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is a popular card game for two players. The aim is to collect matching cards to create melds and end up with less deadwood than your opponent.

How to play Gin Rummy?

Gin Rummy is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Each player is dealt 10 cards. The remaining cards make up the stockpile, and one card goes to the discard stack.

Players can choose to draw a new card, or pick up the top card from the discard pile. The aim is to create as many melds as possible. There are two types of meld:

  1. Runs - three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g. 5-6-7 of hearts)
  2. Sets - three or four cards of the same rank (e.g. 8-8-8)

By creating melds, you can reduce your deadwood count. The deadwood count is the points value of all unmatched cards in your hand (shown in the bottom left corner during play). The Ace counts as 1 point, and all face cards count as 10 points.

If you’ve made enough melds and you think your deadwood count is lower than that of your opponent, you can knock to end the round and compare hands. The difference between the scores makes up the point total the winning player scores. The objective is to score a total of 100 points.

But watch out though! If you knock but your opponent turns out to have a lower deadwood count, the player with the lower count undercuts the player who knocked. That player will receive a 20-point undercut bonus that counts toward their 100-point goal.

If you draw a new card and the result is that you have no deadwood cards left, this is known as a gin hand. You can then declare gin and receive a 25-point gin bonus.

(Please note that the discard indicator that appears to point at your cards during play does not advise which card to throw away. It merely signals that you should throw out a card. That doesn’t have to be the card it happens to be pointing at!)
